More Light Please!

Hi!! I hope everyone is doing amazing.

I grew my plant collection these past few weeks, and I’ve added at least 4-5 new plants! I’m SUPER excited. What’s not exciting is winter is right around the corner! I barely get sun in my apartment in the summer, and it’s my first winter living in this space, so I have no idea was to expect.

So, I’m being proactive and buying grow lights! I have done a little research about lights and what they should and shouldn’t have. And honestly, I think grow lights are kind of ugly! OH, and they can be expensive… I found that if I stay within specific Lumens (how powerful 2,000-4,000 lumens) and Kelvin (temperature 5,000 – 7,000K ), I can make my own grow lights.

Here is what you are going to need !!

Supplies: ( I got most things from Michaels (M) or Dollar Tree ($) )

  • Wire Organize Baskets ($)
  • Wire Cutters (M)
  • Glue Gun / Hot Glue ( M or $ )
  • Dried Floral Moss ( M or $ )
  • Silk Flowers ( M or $ )
  • Floral Foam ( M or $ )
  • Pendant light fixture ( Amazon )
  • Light Bulb ( HomeDepot )
  • Zip Ties ( HomeDepot )
  • Plastic Nail-in Staples ( HomeDepot)

Start by cutting the middle wire at the end of your basket. We want to make a hole at the bottom to string our light through.

IMPORTANT: Test your light fixture to make sure they are working before you continue the project. I thought about this at the end of my first one, and what a bummer if the socket/switch did not work. DUH.

I strung the light through the bottom of the basket and through the top so that the cord lays on the inside of the basket. I folded the cord down the backside of the basket and zip-tied it together to hold it in place.

Taking the moss and fluffing it up, I lined the inside of the basket to help hide the back and sides of the floral foam. I cut pieces of foam to fit the basket and hot glued them down snuggly.

I will say now, do this at your own risk. Depending on the pendant light fixture and light bulb you choose, they can get hot. The ones I have linked above do get warm, but I kept the light socket far enough down from the moss/flowers. Honestly, I’m just hoping it goes well.

Now, this is where you can get creative. You can choose any color flowers you want and arrange them however you like. I chose mauve and berry tones.

Once I was happy with the placement, I put a good amount of hot glue on the stems of my flowers and pushed them into the foam.

Wherever green foam was showing, I put hot glue down and stuck more moss to fill in those spots.

You can see why it is important to test your light fixture before starting. How sad would it have been if it didn’t work!

Twist in your light bulb and turn it on!!

You can hang them however you like! On the wall, from a hook on the ceiling, even a cute clothing rack. I chose to turn them off the wall, and because the lightbulb is so giant, it was touching my wall a little bit. I zip-tied another flipped around the basket to help push the light bulb off the wall. They dont get that hot, but it would be just my luck.

I am sooooo excited to share this with everyone! I wanted to make sure my plants had amazing light and do it in a cute and creative way. Make sure to follow me on Instagram for daily updates, and dont forget to say hi in the comments!

Until next time,

Heather
